Keith Holyoake1904-1983
Keith Holyoake was our third longest serving leader in New Zealand, and is the only person to have been both Prime Minister and Governor General. He served as Prime Minister in New Zealand from 20 September 1957 to 12th December 1957, and then again from 12 December 1960 to 7th February 1972. He was appointed as Governor-General in 1977 and served until 1980.He was strongly criticised for sending troops to the Vietnam but is now seen as 'the most dovish of the hawks', doing the minimum to keep America happy during that time. |
Tim Shadbolt1947-present
Tim Shadbolt is now known as the mayor of Invercargill, but in the 60's and 70's Shadbolt was a high profile student activist in the anti-war movement. He was a prominent member of the Progressive Youth Movement, and was arrested thirty three times during protest campaigns. His most famous arrest was for using the word 'bullshit' while he was public speaking at a rally. following his years as an activist against the Vietnam War, Shadbolt was a Founder of the commune and concrete cooperative at Huia. |
Sue Bradford1952-present
Bradford joined the Progressive Youth Movement at the age of fifteen. She was heavily involved in protest movements, whilst also studying Marxism-Leninism and Maoism. By the end of 1969 Bradford left the PYM to help establish one of the first radical book shops call 'Resistance' in Auckland. From being part of the Anti-Vietnam War movement Bradford went on to join A Women's Liberation Group in 1970, she was then involved in the protests against the springbok tour, and then played a key role in the movement for unemployment beneficiaries. |
